I found out that after connecting the VPN, if I delete the default route 0.0.0.0 and add a new default route using the client computer's original default route before the connection, it works exactly as I want it to work. Same thing happens if we start a download while connected to the VPN and close the VPN connection. Also, if we have a download running on the client before the connection, it gets aborted when SoftEther changes the default route. I discovered that the default route on the client changes to the VPN connection, and therefor we are limited to less than the theoretical office upload speed, which is a lot less than the office download speed. Whenever we connect, the ethernet connection for downloads on our client computers slows down a lot. I recently installed SoftEther VPN on a Windows 2012R2 server at work and added a tunnel on the router to connect to SoftEther.
